Fistral beach, Newquay

UK surf spots don’t get more legendary than Fistral Beach. This stretch of sand and swell just west of Newquay town centre, draws surfers from all over the world, as well as beach-loving families and anyone with a hankering for the Cornish coastline.

Surf at Fistral

A wide beach break exposed to the full brunt of the Atlantic, Fistral beach works in most conditions, so surfers flock here year round. You'll find all abilities in the line-up and surf schools scattered along the bay. Whether you're a seasoned pro or newbie frother, it’s got something worth paddling out for.

Fistral for families

But Fistral's not just a charging surf spot. It’s ideal for family time, too. Think epic sandcastles, kites swooping overhead and picnics tucked up in the dunes. Or, if you don’t fancy packing your own lunch, there are plenty of indie cafés and restaurants to grab a bite.

If it’s a dry land adventure you’re after, Fistral’s clifftop walks have got you covered. Hike along the headland, gulp down that fresh sea air and fill up on big skies. Oh so ‘grammable.

Fistral is sometimes hit with powerful swells (it’s not a world class spot for nothing), especially during winter, so be sure to check the surf forecast before you go. Strong currents exist all year round, too, so always swim between the flags and stay aware of your surroundings.

If the waves are looking meaty and you’re not feeling it, grab your binoculars (or use your phone’s zoom), find a perch on the headland and look out to sea, because the Cribbar might be firing. Newquay’s big wave break, if you’re lucky you can watch fearless wave riders towing in and flying down the face. A sight to be seen.
