Insider's guide to Newquay
Think surf havens this side of the Atlantic and Newquay will probably spring right to the top of your list. Add to that the fact it’s also known as the destination for summer’s famous packed-out Boardmasters Festival and THE place to go for a (wild) night out, and you may have built up a certain picture of what to expect from this north coast town.
Before you do, we’ve got some news.
For a while now, Newquay has been evolving beyond its surf-party image, adding many more strings to the town’s bow. Yes, it’s still a mecca for surfers from far and wide, and the night-life scene is probably the most buzzing you’ll find in Cornwall, but there’s a whole lot more this town has to offer. With its outdoor adventuring and lively contemporary art scene, fountain of family-friendly attractions and spots to entice the foodies – let us show you around a town that’s drawing visitors all year round.
Let's go outside
Love being outdoors? If you’re all about fresh air, movement and connecting to the elements, you’ve found the right town for it. Whether it’s stepping out on the sand, coast path or public pathways, getting the wind in your boat sails from the harbour club, SUP-ing along the coastline or even geocaching with the family, this is the place for it – and yes, you’re likely to find some great surfing across its 11 beaches too.
Beach days: Three main players
Forget the fluff. Fistral Beach is the real deal. This isn't just any beach; from attracting pros and first-timers out onto the swell, to vast sands for families to spread out, rockpools to explore and a fair few surf hires and surf schools to tap into–it’s a real all rounder. You can even practice your golf swing on the course right behind the beach.
When hunger hits, head to one of the cafés, including The Fish House Fistral, The Stable @ Fistral, or Fistral Beach Bar – check out their Mambo Mondays, silent disco and terrace parties, all great for a boogie.
Need to know…
Expect powerful swells, especially during winter. Check surf forecasts before you go. Strong currents exist, so always swim between the flags and be aware of your surroundings.

Want to discover a town beach that’s on the lesser trodden side? Seek out Tolcarne Beach, a quieter haven perfect for those craving a more relaxed vibe. Sheltered by dramatic cliffs, Tolcarne offers protection from the wind and boasts incredible rock pools teeming with life. Explore, discover, and let the kids go wild searching for crabs and shells.
Rent a beach hut for the day or the week and make it your own – a swell set up if you need a space to retreat to with little ones. Make your camp, catch some rays, and enjoy a more laid-back atmosphere. Tap into the bodyboarding scene with Tolcarne Wedge (probably the best bodyboarding wave in the UK) at the left hand corner of the beach, or grab your gear: boards, wetsuits, kayaks, snorkels – you name it – from Newquay Activity Centre.
Head to The Colonial for lunch and snacks or explore Newquay town center, just a short stroll away.

With its gently sloping sands and sea pools brimming with life, Great Western Beach is a real gem for families.
Build sandcastles, fly kites, spike the ball in a game of beach volleyball or let the kids paddle in the shallows. Feeding time offers up Great Western Surf Café serving freshly prepared dishes, or head to its little sister, the Surf Shack beach bar, for cocktails, soft drinks, ice cream and snacks the kids will love.
